ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for Small Business

Three names come up over and over. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. People ask me which one is best. The honest answer is that for what most small business owners do, any of the three will handle it, and the differences are smaller than the marketing makes them sound. But there are real differences, so here they are.

ChatGPT

Made by OpenAI. It is the one your nephew told you about. It is the most widely used, it has the most how-to videos on YouTube, and the phone app is good. You can talk to it out loud, which matters more than you would think when your hands are dirty.

Best for: general everyday use, talking instead of typing, and anything where you want to search around for help online because everybody writes about it.

Claude

Made by Anthropic. This is the one I reach for when I want something written well. It writes in a normal human voice instead of that stiff press release tone, and it holds onto long documents without losing the thread. When a customer sends me a twenty page scope of work, Claude is what I paste it into.

Best for: writing that other people will read, going through long documents, and anything where the wording matters.

Gemini

Made by Google. Its advantage is that it lives inside the Google stuff you may already use. Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Calendar. If your whole business already runs on a Google account, Gemini is the one that is already sitting there.

Best for: businesses already living in Gmail and Google Docs, and quick searches where you want current information.

The honest verdict

If you have never used any of them, open ChatGPT on your phone and talk to it. If your business runs on Gmail, use Gemini because it is already there. If you write a lot of customer-facing material, get Claude.

Do not pay for all three. One paid account is plenty for a small shop.

The part people miss

Here is the thing I tell every contractor. You should not have to open any of these to get the benefit of them. The best use of these tools in a small business is not you sitting at a keyboard asking questions. It is these tools running quietly in the background, answering your phone, writing your follow-up texts, filling out your invoices, and never showing you a chat window at all.

That is most of what I do. I take the same technology in these three apps and turn it into something that answers your calls or chases your unpaid invoices. You never learn a tool. You just stop doing the task.

Try it tonight

Pick one. Open it on your phone. Ask it to write a polite response to a customer complaint you actually got. Read what it gives you. If it sounds close to something you would say, you have seen the whole point.
